Combined defence services (CDS)

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is the appointment committee established by the government of India for the selection of the central government employees. Among various examinations, they are also appointed to conduct CDS exam.

Combined defence services (CDS)is the exam for the defence service which is mainly conducted for the post of Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Indian Air Force Academy (AFA), Officer Training Academy (OTA) are the courses for which exam is conducted by UPSC.

Who can apply for this examination?

There are some certain eligibility criterions that one should have followed in order to implement for this exam, let’s discuss them here.
a. Nationality
The major Criteria for CDS examination as a candidate must either be the following:
· He/she must be a citizen of India, A subject of Bhutan and Nepal to apply for this exam.
· A Tibetan refugee who came, India before 1st January, 1962 to live forever in India.
· The Indian origin person belong to countries such as Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Pakistan, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam has migrated to India permanently.
b. Educational Qualification
IMA and Officer Training Academy: He/she must have a degree from a recognized university.
Indian Naval Academy: Engineering Degree or B.SC with Physics or Mathematics or NCC entry.
Air Force Academy: Bachelor of Engineering or Degree of a recognized university with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2.
c. Age parameter for CDS entry
IMA — Unmarried male candidates (20–24 years)
Indian Naval Academy — Unmarried male candidates (20–24 years)and NCC Naval Wing ‘C’ Certificate Holder 18–23 years
Air Force Academy — 20–24 years, also there is age relaxation up to 26 years to those who hold a valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by the DGCA.
Officers Training Academy — 20–24 years for both men and women.
d. CDS for girls:
For the CDS examination girls are only applicable for the Officer Training Academy (OTA) while for others positions they are not applicable. Unlike, NDA where girls are not eligible to apply for the exam CDS is offering new opportunities to women’s. In future, more vacancies will be declared for women in the defence services as per the words of our defence minister. Also, women’s are eligible for Short Service only while boys are eligible for both short service and permanent commission.

Important instructions about CDS:

i. Every year, CDS exam is conducted twice by UPSC in following manner:
a. In November first week the first notification of CDS exam comes and in February first week exam is conducted.
b. In second week of August the second notification of CDS exam comes and exam is held in the third week of November.
ii. English or Hindi are the two language used for the examination.
iii. Candidates must be physically fit (you can check the criterion on their official website).
vi. Only graduates can apply for CDS unlike NDA where 10+2 is the eligibility criteria.
v. Girls are only applicable for Officer Training Academy (OTA) in the CDS exam.
